RHAY 2022 Conference

RHAY INDUCTION

RHAY reached out to county and National governments through the national council of governors and the Lake region economic bloc (LREB) they were involved in mobilizing submission of abstracts and concept proposals from AYP across the regions. Through the chairperson Dr.Christine Wasike, LREB committed their mandate to the youth in terms of improving health and empowerment with knowledge and information. We also conducted several meetings with His Excellency the governor Kisumu County and his Excellency the deputy in furthering discourse on AYP and sexual health.

BEYOND THE RHETORIC ENGAGING ADOLESCENTS AND YOUNG PEOPLE IN ENDING HIV |

IRDO in partnership with KEMRI, KNH and NIGEE hosted the 1st International Conference on Reducing HIV in Adolescents and Youth (RHAY) in June 21-24, 2022. The conference aimed at providing a forum for AYP to showcase their work on HIV and learn from peers.

KEY THEMES COVERED IN THE CONFERENCE

Key uniqueness of the conference

Over 90% oral and 100% poster presentations done by young people under 30 years old
All data presented were drawn from studies on and programs with adolescents and young people ages 12-24 years
30 of the presenters were capacity-built in research under the 30-U-30 mentorship initiative
Altogether, 29 oral presentations, 47 posters, 4 best practices, 10 keynote speeches by experts, 4 short informal sharing of personal experiences by young people, and 4 implementation science sessions were shared.
A 3 day health camp run by young clinicians and counsellors on (SRH) situations, provide contraceptives and basic management and referrals for Sexually Transmitted , also Kisumu County Ministry of Health provided COVID-19 vaccination services as part of the medical camp.
Baby minder services were also provided for AYP who attended with babies.
Zumba dance sessions interspersed the presentations.
The 2022 Kisumu Declaration : Reducing HIV in adolescents and youth
